Creating a ZFS-only box – the first look

I’m about to start setting up a ZFS-only box using FreeBSD 8.2. There will be no UFS volumes in this system. Every previous server I have set up has always booted from a gmirror’d UFS system first, then mounted a ZFS array. This time, everything will be on ZFS.

I’ve described this server previously when I first chose the parts back in January. Now, the push is on to get this system installed because it’s going to be used as a Bacula tutorial tool at BSDCan 2013 next month.

I have installed 6x Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB HDD in this system. I’ll be running raidz2 on this system. But I’ve run out of time today. All I’ve managed to do is set up the box on the workbench. It took 20 minutes find a VGA cable in the storage area. The system is presently booted from a 7th drive, which I use for just this purpose.

Each Toshiba HDD is attached to the motherboard. There will be no SATA cards used. The boot drive is plugged into a 2-port SATA card, but that will be removed prior to deployment.

I will be using one of these ZFS guides, mostly like the one from pjd.

Here’s the full dmesg output.

    1. A valid point. Although I wouldn’t refer to 8.2 as outdated, it’s FreeBSD 8.2 installed on that floater drive. And FreeBSD 8.2 installed on my Google thumb drive (if I can ever find it).

Yes, I probably will install FreeBSD 8.3, thanks.
