After my first draft, I discovered a few things:
- The motherboard was socket type LGA 1156
- The CPU was socket type LGA 1155
- NewEgg doesn’t list any LGA 1156 CPUs
- The board has SATA 3
- The drives were SATA 6
- Using an Active PFC PSU with my plain 6+ year old UPS will cause the PSU to shutdown when the UPS switches to battery
Here is the new list:

Have you given any thought to a UPS? Or does ZFS make hard-shutdowns safe?
All my gear is on UPS.
That mother board supports a 2nd generation i3. Unless you need the additional computer power of the Xeon, you could save power and build cost by using an i3-2120T (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115094) that has a TDP of 35W.
That a very helpful suggestion. Thank you. For now, it’s blasting away in preparation for BSDCan. Any changes will have to wait until June. Cheers.
