Lime wash – over field stone walls already covered in latex and/or lead-base paint

I have a plan. To paint the basement walls, without paint, but instead a lime-based wash.

The basement is 46x15ft with 9ft tall walls. or 2 * (46 + 15) * 9 = 1098 sq ft.

https://www.limeworks.us/calculator/calc_limepaint.php# says I need 15 gallons of Ecologicâ„¢ LimeWash – $125.00 / 5 gallon. or $375

Let’s see how much NHL 2.0 costs in comparison: estimates start at 75 to 150 square feet per gallon. 1098 sq ft means 14 gallons.

One recipe:

“To make limewash with Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) 2.0, mix NHL 2 powder with water to a thin, creamy consistency (around 1 part lime to 4-6 parts water),”

1 gallon of the Limeworks NHL is $27.00. Mixing 4×1 sounds like by volume, not weight. It should make 4 gallons. 16 bags x $27 is $432

They also sell 55 pound bags for $72 – which should make 26 gallons – way more than I need.

Lancaster Limeworks sells a 20K bag (44lbs) for $48 which should make 20 gallons.

More to follow there. These notes will be updated as more information comes in.
