It’s been some time since I asked for public donations for hardware. In this case, I’m asking for donations to buy two more storage devices to expand this zpool:
[18:08 r730-01 dvl ~] % zpool list data02 NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CKPOINT EXPANDSZ FRAG CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT data02 1.73T 1.39T 351G - - 66% 80% 1.00x ONLINE -
Most of the space is used for FreshPorts, however it is not for the exclusive use of FreshPorts. See more detail below.
[18:08 r730-01 dvl ~] % zfs list -r -d 1 data02 NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT data02 1.39T 296G 96K none data02/freshports 983G 296G 88K none data02/jails 355G 296G 9.54G /jails data02/mkjail 96K 296G 96K /mkjail data02/vm 85.9G 296G 7.24G /usr/local/vm
Not all of this space is exclusive to FreshPorts. This zpool is in a host in my basement. This isn’t the public FreshPorts server, it hosts the dvl, dev, test, and stage instances.
Most of that goes to the ingress nodes.
[18:09 r730-01 dvl ~] % zfs list -r -d 1 data02/freshports NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT data02/freshports 983G 296G 88K none data02/freshports/dev-ingress01 240G 296G 88K none data02/freshports/dev-nginx01 57.8M 296G 96K none data02/freshports/dvl-ingress01 14.4G 296G 96K none data02/freshports/dvl-nginx01 22.1M 296G 96K none data02/freshports/jailed 692G 296G 96K none data02/freshports/stage-ingress01 15.8G 296G 96K none data02/freshports/test-ingress01 20.3G 296G 96K none
Some of the non-FreshPorts stuff can be seen here. Looking through, much of it supports the infrastructure behind my basement homelab, the FreshPorts nodes, and other projects.

Sure, what drive?
The current zpool has two 2TB drives. Here’s the two year growth chart:

Since Feb 2024, the used space went from 400GB to 1500GB – Let’s say 1TB over 17 months (1000/17 or about 60GB a month. Doubling the disk space should give the host another 2-4 years of growth.
The host in question is a Dell R730 with 2.5 slots. I think it may be using a few NVMe cards mounted in PCI slots, but the replacement preference is for the 2.5″ SSD form factor.
My Amazon searches find SAMSUNG 870 EVO 4TB.
I just thought opening a discussion on the FreeBSD forums to let the community discuss drive selection – I wonder how that would go for consensus.
Here! Take my money!
Do not feel obligated, please. Please do not contribute unless you have plenty of surplus. Yourself should always be your first priority. Not me. Not FreshPorts. I can afford to buy these drives myself. However, I also know people like to contribute. This is not an urgent request. The contributions can come in over time.
I created a Patreon page sometime ago, but only published it today.
