Selecting replacements batteries for my Eaton 5PX UPS (5PX2200RT & 5PXEBM48RT)

Both nut and Nagios are telling me: replace my batteries. Fair enough. The UPS (5PX2200RT) and the external battery pack (5PXEBM48RT) were installed and configured with nut four years and two months ago. It’s time.

Usually, I buy compatible third party batteries. Looking at video and images, I’m seeing these units use batteries in a pre-packaged plastic shell. I posted to the nut users mailing list and received some fantastic replies. The best of them have been summarized into the wiki: Choosing replacement batteries for a UPS.

In this post, I’ll be posting about my battery selection process. I hope they arrive here by next week, so I can work on them over the USA Thanksgiving period.

Original parts

I went to the Eaton website and searched for my model numbers and found the pages:

  1. 5PX2200RTEBP-1002 – $698.00 – BATTERY REPLACEMENT
    User replaceable – 12V/9 Ah
  2. 5PXEBM48RT Info: Purchase new EBM – 8 batteries – 12 V / 9 Ah

I also used https://upsselector.eaton.com and found:

  1. 5PX2200RT – https://upsselector.eaton.com/Replace/Battery/602 EBP-1002 – same part as above
  2. 5PXEBM48RT – https://upsselector.eaton.com/Replace/Battery/575 – they tell me to buy a new battery pack

Let’s go shopping

According to Battery Wholesale, these are the batteries I need.

  1. https://explore.batterywholesale.com/product/eaton-5px2200rt/ – says I need 4
  2. https://explore.batterywholesale.com/battery/eaton-5pxebm48rt/ says it weighs 72.31

Both pages list the “Bright Way Group BW 1290 F2” battery, however, that is not what “Add to cart” gets you.

The UPS seems to use the “Bright Way Group BW 1290 F1” battery, a slightly different connector. The page says I need four of them. The external battery pack however, gets you the battery listed at the URL above. I don’t know how many batteries I need for the external unit. (answer: 12)

Quantity research

I started searching for “5PX2200RT replacement batteries” to confirm quantities:

* https://www.osibatteries.com/eaton-5px2200rt-ups-system-battery – 4 needed
* https://powerprosinc.com/eaton-5px-batteries/ – 4 needed
* https://www.upsbatterycenter.com/eaton-2200va-5px2200rt-compatible-replacement-battery-set – 4 needed

Next, I did the same thing with “5PXEBM48RT replacement batteries”:

* https://community.spiceworks.com/t/eaton-5pxebm48rt-battery-installation-scheme/735951/5 – photo says 8 – users say the unit is meant to be replaced, not updated.
* https://www.amazon.com.be/-/en/Eaton-2200i-RT2U-5PXEBM48RT-Battery/dp/B01LNZGPFE – 8 batteries
* https://upsbatteryshop.co.uk/product-category/eaton/5pxebm48rt/ – 8 batteries

It’s interesting that the only sites I found selling individual battery units for the external pack were in Europe. That was the result of searching the web, not searching individual battery suppliers.

Pricing

Battery Wholesale has the goods for $288.00 + $86.27 shipping – $374.27 total – should take about 5 business days for shipping.

NOTE: in the original post, I wrote $228 with $61.74 shipping, a total of $289.74 – clearly wrong.

Let’s look more at the terminal connectors.

Terminals

The battery pack seems to take F2. Two of the three links for the “5PX2200RT replacement batteries” search results include F2 in the model number; the third doesn’t mention a model number.

I think they’re all F2. I have a question into Battery Wholesale. Answer: Yes, I’ll be getting the F2 connectors.

That’s the price for 16x Zeus Battery PC9-12S F2 – 12V 9AH SLA Battery (5.62 pounds each), which is deemed an alternative option.

For the Bright Way Group BW 1290 F2 – 12V 9AH SLA Battery (5.5 pounds each) – $304.00 + $82.32 shipping – $386.32 total.

RaionGroup.com

Next, I compared prices at Raion Group:

The battery sizes are nearly identical to the previous choices. They weigh slightly more.

Their batteries are the Raion Power RG129-36HR (12V 9Ah) (5.62 pounds each)

Now the price is $264.90 plus $50 estimated shipping, $314.90 total.

This post original quoted the price is $197.90 with $40 shipping – $237.90 – clearly incorrect. I say the error is mine.

I’ll decide on Tuesday and place an order.

Tuesday

Today, I order. I’m going with Raion. I just placed the order (11:56 AM Philadelphia USA time). They claim it’s 3-4 days.

Wednesday

They shipped. Should be here on Saturday.

The battery charger arrived earlier today. I also ordered a table, arriving Thursday.
