Author name: Dan Langille

I've been playing with computers since I read an Elementary Electronics magazine way back in the 1970s. I started contributing to open source projects in 1998. After that, I gradually moved from being a software developer to being a systems administrator.

Work found

I’ve found work. Lots of it in fact. I had three job offers, and declined to proceed to with a few more interview processes. In the end, I took a job with Afilias. I’ll be working with PostgreSQL as a DBA (database administrator). It was just 6 weeks ago that I posted to a few mailing lists that I was looking for work. This was shortly a few seemingly hopeful leads died out. […]

Work wanted

I’m looking for work. I’m a software developer with lots of sysadmin experience. My ideal job would require multiple skills and involve development of high availability strategy, some coding, database design, and some sysadmin work, although not necessarily in that order. My resume: http://www.freebsddiary.org/dan_langille.php Will consider relocation.

I’m in yer Austin, ridin’ yer trails!

I’m in Austin, TX on business. I’ve been here since Wednesday night. Thursday was all work. By the time I got back to the hotel, it was time for a online meeting of the BSD Certification group. By the time that was over, it was too late to get to Home Depot. I needed something to cut the cable ties used to pack up the bike. Friday morning was bike assembly. Then I

Garmin’s POILoader and the Garmin nüvi 250

I bought a Garmin nüvi 250. For someone travelling in or to a new area, a GPS navigation device is wonderful. It allows you to concentrate on driving and let the GPS unit do the navigation for you. Today I decided to upload some new vehicle icons. I grabbed a bunch, downloaded then to my computer, and then extracted them from the ZIP files onto the Garmin unit. It was attached to my

Trail riding, fire ants, and stitches

At 4:30 on Thursday, August 30, Lynne and I headed north in her Honda Element, with two mountain bikes tucked into the back of the vehicle. Along for the ride was camping gear. We were head to North Carolina to ride at Tsali. About an hour or two into the trip, we stopped at a service plaza to meet up with one of Lynne’s friends, Robin, who was travelling the other way with

The New Bike

The new bike has arrived. A green Santa Cruz Heckler. The background: Death of a bike: http://one2ride.org/bulletin/index.php?topic=1355.0 Choosing a new fully suspended bike: http://one2ride.org/bulletin/index.php?topic=1357.0 I drove down to Elite Cycling & Fitness (Pinecrest, south Miami) on Wednesday. It is about two hours south from Jupiter. I arrived about 2:30. They attached my pedals. Swapped the brake levers around, so the front brake was on the right. They pumped up the shock for me.

A multi-platform regression testing machine

I’m considering implementing a multi-platform regression testing box. This would be used to run regression tests on each of the platforms. My first consideration was install each OS on a different partition/HDD, then boot into each OS for each test. Then I considerered something like VMWare, or Xen. The pros/cons I thought of were:   Pro Con Multi Boot Each OS will have direct access to the hardware Via code, can I get

The new bike

I’ve been asking around about a replacement bike. Here are the threads I’ve been involved in: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=328743 http://one2ride.org/bulletin/index.php?topic=1357.0 So it looks like I want a Santa Cruz Heckler, with a D kit, and a rear shock upgrade to the Fox RP23. Unfortunately, my local bike shop J-Town Bike does not have it in stock. There is a shop in south Miami that has it, Elite Cycling and Fitness for $1900 without the shock

ProFlex 957 – death of a bike

I bought my ProFlex 957 in December 1996. At the time, I was living in Wellington, New Zealand, and I was visiting Maureen in Santa Barbara, California, USA. The bike has been great. It’s been to Moab a few times. It’s done trails all over New Zealand, and around Ottawa, Canada, and more recently, Southern Florida, USA. It’s always been a great bike. I think the end of life has arrived. Yesterday, as
