More tidbits about the bike ride

I meant to include these tid bits in the prevoius post: Johna is an awesome rider for someone that’s never gone off road before. Shortly after we fixed Gabrielle’s single speed problem, my rear disc brake developed a very loud scraping sound. I’d heard it once before. The little clippy thing on the Avid brakes holds the two disc pads away from the disc. Well, this time we didn’t have pliers to straighten […]

OSCON 2008 – the MTB prelude

Giday! I’m in Portland, for OSCON. I arrived Friday night. Saturday morning, I headed north into Washington to do some mountain biking. The trip leader was Gabrielle. She led Jonatha Leto and me into the Siouxon Creek Trail. This is described by the locals as rolling single track. Umm, yes. That’s right. Rolling. Compared to what I rode in NZ, yes, this is rolling. Compared to what I’ve ridden in Florida and Pennsylvania

BSDCan/PGCon – the wrap up

I’ve cleared out everything from U of O. Everything is now at my parents place, including the main sponsor’s signs. If we are fortunate, perhaps we can use them again next year. After unloading all the gear from the car (5 boxes), I had part of a beer on the patio to cool down. Eventually I got too cold and moved inside, where I started typing up this entry while seated on my

PGCon – Touristy things

This morning I met the tourists at the residence lobby. While there I returned the internet access device that U of O had loaned me. At first, they could not find my ID that I’d left as security. They called me 30 minutes later to say they’d found it. We walked over to the canal and up to Confederation Square. Along the way I gave short talks on the Rideau Canal, Chateau Laurier

PGCon – End of the last day

Yesterday was the last day of PGCon. The closing session started late and finished early. We didn’t run off an auction. We didn’t have much stuff. We were out of the building within 20 minutes of the talks ending and I was at the Royal Oak pub by 6pm. I stayed until 9:30 or so when David and Emilee and I headed to Dairy Queen for a snack. Home by 10:30 and sleeping

PGCon – day 2 of talks

After my previous post, I headed off to the EnterpriseDB dinner at the Velvet Room. The food was great. The open bar, fantastic. The servers were good at their jobs. I sat with Danielle, Willie, Jan, and Julie. Ours was the first able to eat. I stayed until roughly 11pm, drinking scotch. Home and in bed by midnight. Awake about 7am, just in time for the construction noise to start. I took a

PGCon Talks – Day one

Day one started at about 5am for me. I was awake, without the alarm. Ready to go. I was out of the house by 5:50 am and into Cora’s by 6:10. On the way I deposited a cheque. Or rather, I tried to. I was at my personal bank, not my commerical bank. DOH. OK, it was early. Breakfast. Check email, off to the SITE building. On the way, stop in at Starbucks

PGCon – tutorials: day 2 + registration at the pub

This morning I awoke at about 7am and left the house about 8am. A stop at Starbucks and I was down at the Tutorial location by 8:15. First major problem. Signage. A sign was left in the tutorial room over night and it was not there in the morning. I contacted the sponsor, found out the printer, and called them. They said it could be here Thursday morning by noon. From New Hamsphire

End of Day 1 – Tutorials

It is now 9:43 PM. I’ve just arrived home after signing the contract for the PG Dev Summit tomorrow morning. The sponsor will reimburse me later. I spent 4:30-8:45 PM at the Royal Oak conversing with the various attendees. I paid the bills of two people who forgot to pay their bills. With this, the waitress gets a very large tip. I will collect from the people in question tomorrow morning. This happens
