The new bike

I’ve been asking around about a replacement bike. Here are the threads I’ve been involved in: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=328743 http://one2ride.org/bulletin/index.php?topic=1357.0 So it looks like I want a Santa Cruz Heckler, with a D kit, and a rear shock upgrade to the Fox RP23. Unfortunately, my local bike shop J-Town Bike does not have it in stock. There is a shop in south Miami that has it, Elite Cycling and Fitness for $1900 without the shock

ProFlex 957 – death of a bike

I bought my ProFlex 957 in December 1996. At the time, I was living in Wellington, New Zealand, and I was visiting Maureen in Santa Barbara, California, USA. The bike has been great. It’s been to Moab a few times. It’s done trails all over New Zealand, and around Ottawa, Canada, and more recently, Southern Florida, USA. It’s always been a great bike. I think the end of life has arrived. Yesterday, as

OSCON 2007 – the details, the people

I was at OSCON 2007 this week. I was there to present my Nobody Ever Regretted Making a Backup talk: In the past few years, Bacula has been gaining ground on more established solutions, both open source and proprietary. This talk will introduce you to Bacula, show you the main components, give you an outline of how it works, and illustrate why Bacula is becoming so widespread. My talk was scheduled for the

Half way to Florida

I am staying in the Hampton Inn at Jonesville, NC. This morning I was in Ottawa. That’s about 1400km north of here. My friend on my journey was a Garmin Nuvi 250. And there are about 1165km to go. The conferences are over (BSDCan & PGCon), all the gear is packed up, and stored at Willie’s place, ready for 2008. I’ve torn down my rack, packed it into the car, and headed south

Good bye IPsec. Hello OpenVPN.

I’ve been playing with OpenVPN since mid December. I like it. I like it better than IPsec. Why? Because OpenVPN can give me direct access to all my systems wherever I am. I can cvsup from my cvsup server at home from a hotel in Toledo (if I’m ever there). IPsec can do that. But it is much more complex to set up. OpenVPN is pretty simple. At present, my wireless gateway is

Heading south for a few days

In 17 days, I’ll be in Florida. I’m heading down to Palm Beach on business, then over to Tampa to visit friends, and catch a Lightning game. The tickets are vastly cheaper than in Ottawa. Tampa will be playing New Jersey. Ottawa play on Saturday, but by then, I’ll be in Washington for Shmoocon before getting back home on Sunday. I plan to hit the roller coasters while in Tampa. I’m told Busch
