Converting pgeu-system schedule to HTML

I’ve been using pgeu-system for conference organization since 2000. Once feature I wish it had: export the schedule to HTML. The primary reason for that is to decouple the schedule from the software. That way, the schedules are available on the website when the software is not running. That is, instead of pulling the page from the database, you’re pulling the page from static HTML files. Such a feature is useful should you […]

Grace Hopper – My impressions

I wrote this in October 2016. It was not published until August 2022. I loved being at Grace Hopper. I met some very great people and had the opportunity to talk to them about open source software. I got some great ideas from some folks and I sure hope the stuff I passed on will encourage others to take up open source. There’s money at Grace Hopper. Lots of money. I counted 9

Tips for running an online conference

NOTE: This post was composed in June 2020. I think I got started running conferences in 2002 when I helped with Open Source Weekend 2003. The next year, I started BSDCan. Three years later, PGCon start. All up, I think I’ve run at least 32 conferences, two of which have been online: BSDCan 2020 and PGCon 2020. This article was planned before the conferences were held. There have been requests to share what

New external HDD

While in Ottawa for BSDCan 2015 and PGCon 2015, I obtained a 4TB external USB HDD. It now contains copies of the videos back to 2012 for BSDCan and PGCon. This is for backup. All these videos exist elsewhere (e.g. Youtube) and I have these just for backup. NOTE: the videos for BSDCan 2015 and PGCon 2015 will be online as soon as they are available. There is no ETA. Here’s what it

Have you never been to BSDCan?

I remember a time when I’d never been to a conference related to my passions. Once I went, things changed. I realized that making strong working relationships with others who share my passion is important. Not only does this solidify the community of which you are a member, it also helps you personally. Every conference I have attended gave me a great idea for a current or upcoming project. Here are a few

The Bacula Tutorial jail server

One of the challenges of providing hands-on demonstrations is giving everyone their own sandbox to play in. I don’t want people to spend time on installing software. I want people to learn about the software in question, specifically Bacula. With this in mind, I’ve been building up a solution based on FreeBSD 9.1, ZFS, and jails. My solution is pretty nifty, but I don’t think it’s anything special. The key is simplicity. The

PGCon 2013 registration is now open

PGCon 2013 is coming up soon. We’ve had confirmation from EnterpriseDB that they be hosting a social event on the Thursday night. You’ll have heard about this party from 2012, seen the pictures, and wish you’d been there. This year, they are going back to the same venue again this year. Of course, in addition to the great social opportunities, we’re also bringing in some big-name speakers for the tutorials and talks. Do

BSDCan 2013 – registration now open

BSDCan 2013 will be the tenth BSDCan. This will be big. A huge party is planned for the Friday night. We’re also bringing in some big-name speakers for the tutorials and talks. Do not underestimate how much you’ll learn, how much fun you’ll have, and how many good working relationships and friendships you will develop at BSDCan. One word of advice: accommodation.
